The Purge takes place in the not so distant future, 2022. The movie discusses how America is now a nation reborn, with crime and unemployment at an all-time low. During this time, the government allows a yearly event called “The Purge” to take effect. “The Purge” is a 12-hour event in which people are able to vent all negative emotions they may have, and all crime, including murder, is legal. During this time all emergency services are suspended. Also during this time, mostly individuals of low socioeconomic statuses are often targeted, seeing how they don’t have the money to protect themselves. “The Purge” exists in order for America to continue being a new nation reborn, and to control crime.
Now that the synopsis is out of the way, the movie itself goes by pretty quickly. The movie focuses on the Sandins, a wealthy family whose wealth comes from the selling of home security systems. The movie is somewhat pretty cliché. The trailer pretty much gives away the whole movie. The family itself is preparing for the annual “Purge,” the son allows a random stranger to enter their home during this time (the stranger was running away from individuals hunting him down during “The Purge”), and suddenly (yet predictably) the family begins to be attacked by the individuals hunting down the stranger. The whole movie highlights the family’s struggles to stay alive and fight back against those trying to invade their home. There’s blood, guts, violence, suspense, all that you would expect from a movie such as The Purge.
While watching this movie all I could think of was that I’m now more afraid to walk around at night. The masks that these individuals who were attacking the Sandins were creepy, and all I kept picturing was randomly encountering someone at night during one of my night runs wearing a mask like that. I wouldn’t know what to do, if anything I would run the opposite direction, and my speed will increase tremendously.
I also feel bad for Ethan Hawke. He keeps playing characters that get killed off each time he’s trying to protect his family. First it was in Sinister, and now this movie. It’s as though he’s been typed cast to play father figures who indirectly put their family in danger, and in up dying while trying to protect them.
All and all, if you’re a fan of horror movies, particularly those who that involve suspense and a touch of gore/violence, then The Purge is your movie. The concept is unique, but the action isn’t anything one hasn’t seen before.
Finishing Thought: Bottom line… DON’T TALK TO STRANGERS … because you never know someone may be after that stranger… and then after you!!! Just saying!!!
