In honor of World Cat Day, let’s take a look back at the Disney classic Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey, specifically Sassy the cat.
A little background about the movie:
Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (released in 1993 by Walt Disney Studios) is an American remake of the 1963 film The Incredible Journey. Both films were based on the best-selling novel The Incredible Journey, written by Shelia Burnford. A sequel was later released in 1996 called Homeward Bound II: Lost in San Francisco.
The film follows three animals, a Golden Retriever named Shadow, an American Bulldog named Chance, and a Himalayan Cat named Sassy; as they travel hundreds of miles to reach home after getting lost in the wilderness, while their family is on vacation.
A little bit about Sassy:
Sassy is a smart mouthed, yet intelligent Himalayan Cat belonging to Hope Seaver. Her name is quite fitting for she is actually quite sassy (pun intended). Like a classic Himalayan, she exudes elegance, often believing she is superior (all cats for that matter) to dogs. Throughout both movies, she proves to be quite useful in aiding Chance and Shadow during their travels, for her abilities as a cat at times are unmatched to that of dogs (i.e. she’s the only one able to catch fish for everyone during dinner time). She is often complaining, yet reluctantly tags along with the boys, shedding her spoiled ways bit by bit. During her travels, the viewer begins to discover that she is actually fond of her two loyal dog friends, and sees them as family. Arguably her most memorable line is her personal mantra of “Cats rule and dogs drool!”
Sassy is voiced by two-time Academy Award winning actress Sally Field, and was played by Tiki the cat actor.
Finishing Thought: Cats are just sassy, plain and simple.
